    Developing good habits is the goal of functional orthodontics! Health is a game of strategy – start small and basic. Proper eating and breathing has great POWER

    This is the rehabilitation of the masticatory system every day and every minute. Our little ones need support. Health is a dynamic thing, there is no guarantee of health if we do not take care of it ourselves. The orthodontist does not need to know strategically how to deal with the patient’s muscles during dental rehabilitation, but he should be able to diagnose abnormalities and refer the patient to the appropriate specialist.

     

     

    Chewing is a physical activity that must be learned from an early age. Just like we learn to speak and write. We need to learn to chew properly. Chewing is very important for the child’s physical and mental development and the proper development of the jaw. A delay in the development of this function may occur due to incorrect eating habits, e.g. a mushy diet, using a bottle instead of a spoon for too long, a small supply of solid and hard food. Attention, children are great at manipulating and forcing their preferred industrially processed foods. Incorrect habits such as using pacifiers and finger sucking also affect the abnormal development of the facial skeleton. More and more often, children come to my office with changes in muscle tension in the mouth and dental abnormalities. Therefore, proper eating habits are an important element. Biting hard foods and crushing food provides the necessary impulse for the growth of the jaw bones, which is one of the elements of preventing malocclusion and posture.

    You change your habits, you change your whole life.
    • Orthodontic treatment involves cooperation between specialists, but also cooperation between doctor and patient.

    • If your malocclusion is cured, but incorrect habits remain, the malocclusion will recur.

    What is the resting position of the tongue?

    Where is your tongue all the time when I’m not working?

    Mostly we do not pay attention to where our tongue is – what position it takes in the mouth when it is not moving while speaking, drinking or eating.
    This position, called the tongue resting position, is also called the “cobra” position. We in the office call it the “medusa” position
    Problems occur when the tongue is positioned incorrectly in the resting position. The consequences of this setting may affect many problems that will affect our teeth and even our health.
    From an orthodontic point of view, the tongue is the best physiological orthodontic appliance. Its location on the palate ensures, among others, proper development of the jaw, then the jaw takes the shape of the letter U. However, if the tongue lies at the bottom (i.e. on the mandible), the jaw may change its shape to the letter V. Incorrect positioning of the tongue also changes the respiratory path.
    The position of the tongue also affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ):
    1.  the tongue placed on the mandible excessively burdens it and hinders proper motor coordination of the tongue-mandibular complex,
    2.  the tongue placed on the jaw may encourage the head and neck to move forward, which causes the jaw to move back and increases compression in the jaw,
    3.  the tongue placed on the jaw may force an inappropriate way of breathing – through the mouth,
    4.  the tongue placed on the jaw presses on the front teeth, which may cause them to tilt.
    Numerous studies have shown that the lack of a correct resting position of the tongue causes disturbances in the development of the facial skeleton and, consequently, the lack of good conditions and proper space for the production of speech sounds. The swallowing function (!) and then speech sounds are created on the matrix of the resting position of the tongue. According to prof. D. Pluta-Wojciechowska is a vertical-horizontal movement, according to prof. B. Ostapiuk is a cobra position, and for many it is a verticalization of a broad tongue.
    The resting position of the tongue is the wide tongue located behind the upper incisors, attached to the palate for ¾ of the length of its anterior dorsal surface.
    The verticalization of the language is efficiency.
    We observe it in the following aspects:
    1. resting position of the tongue,
    2. swallowing,
    3. breathing,
    4. articulation (pronunciation).

    Speech is the icing on the cake.
    Correct pronunciation requires specific, precise micro-movements of our speech organs. Any dysfunction of these organs affects the proper production of speech sounds. For example: by disturbing the resting function of the tongue, it will contribute to pronunciation defects of almost the entire phoneme-phonetic system of the Polish language, because given sounds are produced on the matrix of the position of a wide and raised tongue (according to the phoneme-phonetic system of B. Rocławski).

    The resting function of the tongue is usually disturbed bya short frenum of the tongue (ankyloglossia), abnormal respiratory function, tone disorders, neurogenic diseases.
    Anatomical disorders of the facial skeleton contribute to the development of anatomical dyslalia (disorders of speech sounds due to anatomical defects of the speech organs; after: D. Emiluta-Rozya; ), and disorders of biological/physiological functions such as breathing, food processing and swallowing will result in functional dyslalia (speech sound disorders due to physiological function disorders).

    Organization matters?
    Developed habits stay longer.
    What can language crowding lead to :

    1. or only for an open bite in the anterior section,
    2. or only to tilt the incisors,
    3. or only to narrow the jaw (V shape),
    4. or just to rebuild the entire pattern of facial development.

     

    An atomic habit and a trivial problem. COULD IT BE? Tongue dysfunction may seem like a trivial problem.

    But don’t underestimate the strength and power of language. The tongue is the strongest muscle in the body.

    Habit is our strongest habit. The combination of these two things can have a devastating impact on your child’s development.

    Pushing the tongue between the teeth prevents the development of proper occlusion because the tongue that is between the teeth blocks the eruption of the teeth.

    If therapy with a speech therapist does not bring the expected results, it is worth considering an alternative solution.

    A tongue block may prove to be the right solution to this unfavorable balance of forces in the oral self. But don’t forget to practice your language!

    The blockade itself will not eliminate our problem.

    Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that deals mainly with the diagnosis and treatment of malocclusions.
    However, teeth are only the recipient of the problem, not the sender, so it is important to find the cause of the problem.
    If the teeth are crooked, it means that something caused them to become crooked.
    It is worth recognizing functional abnormalities in advance that lead to occlusal disharmony and cause malocclusion. Some of the problems appear already in childhood and it is worth introducing prevention of malocclusion in children.
    The power of good habits, i.e. breathing through the nose, eating with the mouth closed and sitting upright, is important for the child’s health and development. Whoever controls it, controls their health.
    We all breathe and eat, we think we do it well. ️Unfortunately, our children are breathing, sitting and eating incorrectly more and more often. ️Proper breathing means an active nose and closed mouth. Tongue stuck to the palate. Correct breathing pays off because when a child breathes through the nose, his development is normal. ️When breathing is incorrect, the baby’s jaw and dental arches may be distorted. Which leads to increased bone malocclusion and posture defects.

    Pay attention – how your child breathes, how he sits, how he chews and how he swallows!

    Mouth breathing. A trivial problem?

    Few people probably pay attention to whether the child’s mouth is open or closed.

    If breathing through your mouth is a habit, you can use a PATH to help

    We exercise the orbicularis muscle of the mouth with a speech therapist and a physiotherapist and at home. The abnormal function, i.e. mouth breathing, disturbed the proper growth of the facial skeleton.

    Is this important?

    • improper breathing through the mouth (you should breathe through the NOS correctly)
    • improper drinking and eating as well as swallowing
    • the child does not close his or her mouth while eating
    • abnormal tension of facial muscles (including CIRCULAR ORAL MUSCLE LAXITY) of the entire face
    • incorrect direction of jaw growth – down and to the back of the face
    • malocclusion, dental and bite abnormalities
    • incorrect resting position of the tongue

Because the teeth are then susceptible to unfavorable changes, which leads to, among others, 1. malocclusion 2. abnormal tooth eruption 3. tooth wear 4. TMD (pain in the jaw joints, headaches), which is becoming more and more common in children NOTE: Prevention is better, healthier and cheaper than treatment.
