Teeth whitening involves the oxidation of dyes until completely colorless chemical compounds are obtained, therefore the final effect of tooth whitening depends on the type and intensity of discoloration. Some discolorations (e.g. after tetracyclines, nicotine) require more treatments.
Only the enamel surfaces of the teeth are whitened, not fillings or prosthetic restorations, so they may need to be replaced after the whitening process is completed, but not earlier than 2 weeks after the completion of tooth whitening.

After partial removal of the old filling, the doctor places a whitening preparation inside the tooth and protects the tooth with a temporary filling.
